’ANCIENT CHASM CLOSED IMPRESSIVE RATIFICATION SETTLEMENT OF CLAIMS By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Australian Press Association. London, Oct. 3. “The great chasm which opened in the Scottish Church 86 years ago is being closed to-morrow,” declared Lord Sands yesterday, supporting in the Assembly of the Church of Scotland the report authorising union with the United I’ree Church. The Duke of York, Lord High Commissioner, was present yesterday and participated in to-day’s ceremonial, including the.induction of Dr. John White, Glasgow, as first moderator of the United Free Church. The Assembly of the United Free Church also approved of the union, the terms of which provide for the dissenting minority of 33 congregations to receive £25,000 in settlement of all claims. There were impressive scenes in Edinburgh when the. ratification of the union took place. The delegates marched in procession through the streets to St. Giles. Later 12,500 witnessed the act of ratification, when the General Assemblies met in joint session. The Duke of York conveyed the King’s message of congratulation.
