PATEA GOLF CLUB BALL

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Favoured with a perfect evening the Pa tea Golf Club’s, annual ball on Tuesday evening was an unqualified success, both financially and: socially. Visitors from all over the district .were present. Green and rose streamers formed a canopy over the dancing floor, while arclies of bamboo, illuminated with the names of the holes of the Patea links, brightened the walls. The finishing touch to the decorative scheme consisted of a large tee supporting a big illuminated golf ball, above which was suspended the club’s. monogram brilliantly lighted. In the supper room Iceland poppies predominated.

The chic alcove -was very well patronised, testifying to the skill of those responsible for mixing the refreshments. HOSPITAL NURSES’ EXAMINATION'S 1 The setting of nurses’ examinations was discussed again by the South Taranaki branch of the Women’s Division yesterday. Mrs. D. M. Cameron said nurses generally seemed to be in favour of the scheme.' She was not referring to any particular hospital district but to the Dominion as a whole. Several doctors agreed that a. standard examination would be in the best interests of the hospital system. It sometimes happened in small places that the examinations as set by the hospital doctors were inadequate and, when the time arrived for -the final examination, which was a standard one, nurses from such districts were insufficiently trained. She would admit that Hawera had had capable medical superintendents, and the district ranked high in regard to nurses passes in examinations. If nurses were to become proficient in their work, she contended, the examinations should be standardised. It was eventually decided to hold the matter over until shortly before the annual conference. Mrs. W. Seed was appointed the branch’s delegate to the executive of the Boys’'and Girls’ Agricultural Club. Arrangements rvere finalised for the garden party to be held at Hollybank, the residence of Mr. E. G. Betts, on October 27, and it was decided to hold a dance and social in the evening at the Tokaxira Hall. The meeting was held in Hawera yesterday, Mrs. W. E. Carter presiding. There were also present: Mesdames T. Allen, H. Thrush, J. Cocker, W. Seed, C. N. Wickridge, D. M. Cameron, E. Meuli, N. Smith and Miss A. B. Johnstone.
