CORRESPONDENCE

“OUR FINANCES.” (To the Editor.) Sir,—l was pleased to see that letter on the above subject from the pen of Mr. W. R. Wright, of Rahotu, which appeared in your issue of 24th September. From- it I gather that neither the Auditor-General 'nor Mr. Wright regard with veneration the deep wisdom of our so-called “wizards of finance.'.’ It is clear that, were they young enough Mr. Wright would insist on their taking their mothers with them when they o-o to London to convert our next loan falling due. It must be admitted that wetting a loan renewed at an increase of 28°per cent, is not beyond the capacity of an ordinary old lady, and, indeed, sh& might have induced the London ’ financiers to have been satisfied with considerably less, seeing that we are one of their best customers. Even jn the' case where a Wizard has not wot a mother, some other old lady could be secured to guide our financial experts. I also gather from a Wellington paper that our honourable gentlemen of the House of Representatives are holding meetings on the quiet with the view of raising 0 their own wages for the four months a year spent in Parliament, mainly listening to each other’s weaknesses. Their present wage is £450 a year, with free train rides all the year, etc. ’ I fear that it is.this craving for more pay for themselves that is at the bottom of their open cry for bigger pay for the police, and for the Civil Servants generally. Human nature is an animal that wants watching pretty closely, no matter What position it holds. Let those members of ours compare their own position, the position of the police, and the position of the Civil Servant with that of the uncared for, the unemployed, the wretched, the starving. See to it that these are fiist relieved of their miseries before pandering to your own greed.—l am, etc., ° J. O. TAYLOR. New Plymouth, r 'ct. I.
