EVENTS ON RACE TRACKS

THE BAY’S SPRING MEETING GUINEAS WILL BE CHIEF EVENT. UNUSUALLY BIG FIELDS ENGAGED

(By

“Moturoa.”)

Alaa! Poor Lame-rick. # w * » Dutch Money is “Gulden.” #** # * No more “Hard Words” for us! # # # # The Avondale Cup is now Historic. # # * # Gold Money investments went up with the barrier on Saturday. * 4> * * The Eaglet-Goldfinch combination lives on Guineas and Sovs. # # * « In spite of what the ecicntists say, Moa Bird is not extinct. * * * * At Hastings Bert. Coyle started the Sprincr Handicap with a Kick Off. °*# # . * The Flaxmere Handicap looks very open. Te Awha, Sylvan Dell and Malahat are a likely trio to run prominently. u « «■ * - Maiden events are tough to sort out in the spring, but the three-year-olds Anda and Head Serang have shown form. Of the others Piako and Tea Taster have galloped attractively at times, but the Lord Quex gelding Anda looks a likely one to set a warm pace, # * * The Hawke's Bay one-day spring fixture, which-takes place to-day, has drawn unusually big fields, and the good class of horses engaged augurs well for a most successful gathering. The Hawke’s Bay clubs have fallen on bad times and it would be pleasing to see them experience a change of fortune. # w * * Seventeen are left , in the Nursery Handicap, but the public, will probably favour Simba and Chryaology. On the score of form and condition Simba may be made favourite over the Lowry representative. This race is run over half a mile, Simba’s weight is 8.10, *#. * ■ # The programme concludes with the Flying Handicap. The majority of the candidates are being asked to win “first up.” Toxeuma is a clasey galloper, and in spite of his lack of racing his form on the tracks may make him a firmer favourite than Royal Lineage and. Great Charter. The latter generally races well when fresh. # « * * The baker’s dozen carded for the To moana Hurdles are a good lot as hack jumpers go, and with two barrels entered in Fine Acre and Hard Gold, the Foxton mentor, Alf. Wright, appears to hold a strong hand. Jen, Raukauponga and Peshwa win in their turn, and among the lightweights Princess Elizabeth, Royal Elm and Tanagra have their admirers. Fine Acre is thought to be. a doubtful starter, and in his absence the public may favour Hard Gold and Peshwa. # ® ® The Glengaray Handicap looks decidedly open. Clever ,(a Lowry representative) raced prominently last spring, winninor three races on end. Masher scored clecisively on the opening day at Wanganui, but got a bad run on the second day. He seems to be a fair sori.. Balloon • is inconsistent, but Tourist should pick up a race when he .learns to begin'smartly. Chopin and Clarendon are winners thia season, and the money that has been lost on Arrowhead indicates that his party think a lot of him. They may be fancied in the order of Masher, Clever and Tourist. . # ® ® * Admiral Drake, who was not telegraphed as an acceptor for the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, has paid up for the race. In splitting Eaglet and False Scent (the dividend payers in the Avondale Guineas) in the Wanganui Guineas he registered a good performance, and he ran another good race into second place behind Laughing Prince in the Eclipse Stakes. ' That form was good. Hunting Cry, Roundelay, and Air Laddie were a trio who shaped well at Wanganui, and the filly My Own shaped well last season. Of that quartette Hunting Cry’s performance at Wanganui reads best. In what promises to be a good race it is difficult to see Admiral Drake supplanted in the betting market, and he looks likely to be much better backed than was Hunting Cry and Tahoma, who is also an acceptor. ® ® ® ® • The Spring Handicap, run over ten furlongs, can be classed as a good sec-ond-class field, and the eight acceptors will all find a fair quota of supporters. The veteran Kick Off won at Wanganui, and won decisively. The way he gathered in Piuthair and Otairi was an exposition of the best of his old form, and with Goldfinch again in the saddle to-day backers of the All Black gelding will have more confidence. Blimp runs patchily, and in his best form would not worry much about his impost. King’s Jest and Queen’s Choice are gallopers of no mean ability, but a furlong shorter would suit .them better. "Zippor has friends, and under his light weight High Coiirt, who finished on well at Wanganui, has a host of admirers. WHien the final bell -is ringing it may be found that the weight of public opinion will favour Kick Off and High Court.
