TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND ARRIVAL-EARLY NEXT YEAR. SOME MEMBERS OF THE PARTY. London ,Aug. 23. About 30 prominent farmers or landowners of Great Britain will bo members of the farmers’ party which is to tour New Zealand early next year under the auspices of the British National Union. The number from this country will he limited to 50, and the sections from South Africa and Canada will be limited to about 15 respectively. Lord Bledisloe, who will be the leader, has decided to travel by the Remuerp. on January 17 with the rest of the party. Previously, for the sake of Lady Bledisloe, who is a bad sailor, he had intended to go by one of the other routes. Lady Bledisloe, who is accompanying her husband, is well known for her charm and her philanthropic work. She is the younger daughter of the first Baron Glantawa. of Swansea —better known as Sir John Jones Jenkins, M.P., a Liberal politician of South Wales, a great industrialist and philanthropist. The Hon. Elaine Jenkins, before her marriage, like her father, was a wellknown philanthropist and promoter of Welsh home industries. She was also a noted beauty, and her portrait is included in “Types of English Beauty” —a volume published in London in 1920; SIR RICHARD AND LADY WINFREY. Sir Richard and Lady Winfrey are also joining the tour. Sir Richard was one of the earliest protagonists for small holdings, and is at present chairman of the Lincolnshire and Norfolk Small Holdings Association. He was M.P. for Norfolk from 1906 to 1923, and for the Gainsborough Division in 1923 and 1924. He was Parliamentary Secretary to Earl Carrington from 1906 to 1910, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture from 1916 to 1918. He is the proprietor of the Peterborough Advertiser and a number of other provincial newspapers. Mr. and Mrs. D. Crawford and Mr. A. C. Hill are the representatives of Hertfordshire. Mr. Crawford is one of the leading members of the National Farmers’ Union. Mr. J. J. Cridlan, who will also be accompanied by his wife, is a neighbour of Lord Bledisloe in Gloucestershire, and is a well-known Aberdeen Angus cattle-breeder. Mr. Alec Steel, Mr. John Steel and Mr. Harold Rankin represent Essex. Mr. Alec Steel has had a great deal to do with the development of Southend as a watering place. A couple of years ago he won the Challenge Cup for the best cultivated farm in Essex. Mr. Clifford Glossop, Mr. C. Powell and Mr. John Todd are from Yorkshire. Mr. Glossop specialises in the breeding of Friesian cattle. OTHER MEMBERS OF THE PARTY. Mr. G. H. Pattinson, of Windermere, was formerly High Sheriff of Westmoreland and chairman of the WestmorelandCounty Council in 1928. Mr. W. I. Campbell, of Edinburgh, is a large grower of Scotch potatoes, he also specialises in seeds for the British and overseas markets. Major B. M. Edwards, of Norfolk, is a breeder of Friesian cattle. Mr. Mark Young, of Sandy, Bedfordshire, is a very large market gardener. Othci- members of the party arc Mr. W. E. Crump and Mr. Albert West, of Sussex; Mr. and Mrs. Thistleton-Smith and Mr. 'E. C. Bacon, of Norfolk; Mr. A. Gerald Smith, of Suffolk; Mr. Robert Hornsby, of Cumberland; Mr. J. H. Rowland, of South Devoii; and Mr. J. B. Smalley, of North Lancashire. Still another who has definitely booked her passage is Mrs. 11. Russell-Fer-gusson, who farms her own land at Ardtur, Appin, Argyll, Scotland. Mrs. Russell-Gergusson started her farming with a small herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle, large black pigs, and some dairy cows, principally Ayrshires. For the last two years, however, she has been running a dairy and poultry business. She retails milk daily to Ballachulish and Kinlocheven, a distance of 25 miles, and she also supplies butter, eggs and poultry and a certain quantity of fruit and vegetables.
