POWER LOAN AUTHORISED

OVERWHELMING MAJORITY DECISION OF THE RATEPAY’ERS. ————— • SCHEME TO PURCHASE PLANT. By an overwhelming majority ratepayers in the inner area of the South Taranaki Electric Power Board’s district yesterday carried the board’s proposal to raise a loan of £187,500. As a result of the carrying of the poll the board will spend £136,500 in acquiring the whole of the Hawera County Electric Company’s business, and the balance of the sum authorised will be raised from time to time to provide for extensions of the present supply system. The first development will be the reticulation of the Waimate West area, where for every ratepayer who voted against the proposal ten voted for it. The ratio in the other areas was: Hawera borough, five for to one against; Hawera County, four to one; Normanby, seven to one; Manaia, five to one. The final result was:— For the loan ; 1062 Against the loan : . 206 Informal 6 Majority for the loan .... 850 There was not the interest taken in the poll that was expected, less than half the number of ratepayers in the area exercising their vote. In the Hawera borough, which has 1101 ratepayers, 509 voted. In the Hawera county 371 voted out of 874. In Waimate West county 267 .out of 448. In Manaia 70 out of 199, and in Normanby 57 out of 121. The poll closed at 6 p.m. and the returning officer (Mr. H. S. Elliott) had the filial results posted shortly after 7 p.m. Detailed results are: —

PARK BOWLING CLUB. SOCIAL AND PRIZE-GIVING. The Park Bowling Club held a social gathering at Hawera on Wednesday evening,°a euchre tournament, musical numbers and dancing providing pleasant entertainment. In the euchre tournament the first prizes went to Mrs. Chadwick and Mr./’Whitton, and the second prizes ot Miss Marsh and Mr. Chadwick. In each case three players tied for first place, those who were unsuccessful in playing off being Mrs. Barnett and Mr. Greig. A guessing competition for a lady’s nightdress was won by Mr. W. Barnett, who guessed the number of peas, in a bottle as 1671, the, correct number being 1670; Musical items were given by Mrs. Drynan, Miss Butler, and Mr. H. Briggs, Miss Butler playing, the accompaniments. After supper the president (Mr. J. Goodwin), presented the prizes won during the evening and also the bowling tropines won during the season on the club’s green as follows: Chib championship singles, A. Smith; handicap A singles, G., Villars; handicap B singles, A. Barnett; handicap pairs, J. Colman (skip), R. E. Familton (lead). Mr. Goodwin referred to tho competition amongst club members during the season, and stressed the consistent-play and keenness displayed by the various winners. He hoped that the coming season would see even keener enthusiasm in club matches, and gave an open invitation to the ladies present to visit the green, where all would be welcome. He also wished to thank the ladies, on behalf of club members, for the manner in which they had assisted at the green with afternoon tea, and hoped to have similar assistance in the future. He also thanked the artists for their great assistance during the evening.

KAPUNI HALL DANCE. / • EUCHRE PRIZES PRESENTED. Tho Kapuni Hall Society brought its successful winter activities to a close last Tuesday evening when . the final dance of tho season was held. There was a good attendance from the surrounding districts, including visitors from Patea, Alton, Manutahi, Stratford and Matapu. From Manaia there were two bus loads. Wills’ orchestra played dance music which was thoroughly appreciated by all. Messrs. A. J. Scott, G. Cox and H. McLean were masters of ceremonies, and tho supper was in charge of Mesdames R, G. Hodge and H. Whalen and Misses E. McLean, Tutt and Murphy, assisted by several willing helpers. During the evening the points prizes euchre tournaments were presented, tho (a teaset and a handbag) won at the respective winners being Mrs. W. A. Guy (74* points) and Mr. W. Whalen (79* points). The runners-up were Miss E. McLean (73* points) and Mr. C. Whalen (72£ points). Mr. W. Whalen was the winner of the men’s points prize last year. Extras were played by Misses Mabel Guy, Grace Nicholson and Hickland.
