NEW VESSELS FOR DOMINION

PLANS OF THE UNION COMPANY. By Telegraph—Press Association Auckland, Aug. 15. Captain J. Foster, marine superintendent of the Union Steam Ship Company, in an interview said there was such a transformation in regard to power for the propulsion of big modern steamers that all the various types used or introduced had to be studied. No definite conclusion had been reached by the company in connection with a new big mail liner planned for the trans-Pacific trade, while there was also under consideration the replacement of the steamer Maori in the inter-island service with a new vessel. The company had placed orders at Home for a new oil-burning cargo vessel for the Dominion coastal trade, which was expected to be ready next February. It was proposed that the vessel for the inter-island trade should be of the most modern design and fast, but the kind of drive, as in the case of the new vessel planned for the trans-Pacific trade, had yet to be decided.
