FITZROY STREET WORKS
INFORMATION FROM BOROUGH. On the recommendation of the works committee the New Plymouth Borough Council last night decided to give the following answers to various requests made by the Fitzroy Progressive Association : —
Footpath, Baring Terrace. —Work on this street has been authorised and only awaits suitable weather to be put in hand.
Henui Street. —As this street is metalled and is in a fair state of repair it is not intended to do anything further at present. Record, Newton and Richmond Streets. —The worst portions of the footpaths in these streets have been attended to, although in other places the footpaths still need repairs, and these will receive the engineer’s attention. Nobs Line (Turehu Street). —Permanent level plans have now been prepared. The formation of this street would be a suitable work for unemployed, but is not on the list of subsidised works. The council at present cannot see its way to incur the expenditure necessary. Waiwaka Terrace. —Fencing of high level footpath is not considered necessary by the council. Storm water at Air. Alark Barnett’s property, Waiwaka Terrace. —The council cannot see its way to take any action in the matter. Diversion of stock route from residential portion of Fitzroy.—This matter is still under consideration by the council and the town-planning committee.
McLean Street.—Ordinary maintenance work in this street will receive the attention of the engineer. The engineer was authorised to kerb and channel and form and - gravel a footpath on the west side of Nobs Line, from AlcLean Street to the northern end of the street.
In connection with the proposed work on Turehu Street, Cr. Stainton said this was undoubtedly work suitable for unemployed. He moved that application be made to the Public Works Department for an allocation for the work. A footpath on the south side of McLean Street, from Nobs Line to Hamblyn Street, was also desirable, he said. Relief work could be done in this locality when weather conditions prevented the men operating on bigger undertakings. The town clerk pointed out the Public Works Department had allocated all the unemployed fund for the borough. Cr. Stainton then said he would prefer to leave the matter to the works committee to do what it could. This was agreed to.
