DEVASTATION AT MURCHISON

COUNTY SEEKING RELIEF.

Wellington, July 25. A deputation to the Public Works Minister to-day asked for relief in respect of earthquake damage in the Murchison district. Mr. Stewart, chairman of the Murchison County Council, said that the position was hopeless. The county could not restore the damage. Free grants were needed to open up all the valley roads. A four-foot stock track was wanted down the Buller Gorge. It was necessary that the Midland Railway should be completed as soon as possible, also the Lewis Saddle highway. Replying sympathetically, the Minister said that the Buller Road would do opened np, but- the slips had to conBolidate. All the matters would be carefully considered. In introducing the deputation, Mr. Black, M.P., stated that £12,350 was wanted by the county to restore roads, £2OOO for the re-establishment’ of the hydro-electric scheme, end a grant of £2OOO to conserve the interests of the Public Trustee on a loan of £15,000.
