EGG-LAYING COMPETITION

SIXTEENTH WEEK’S RETURNS. The returns for the sixteenth week of the Taranaki Egg-Laying Society's second annual competition and to date are supplied by the society’s supervisor, Mr. Don Stewart, as follows: — WHITE LEGHORNS.

HAWERA ORANGEMEN MEET.Orangemen and their friends assembled in large numbers at a social and dance in the Foresters’ Hall, Hawera, conducted by the Loyal Orange Lodge on Wednesday night. Representatives were present from Stratford, Eltham, Feilding and Levin. Two Scottish dances fcpre given by Miss Gower, Eltham, accompanied on the pipes by - Mr. L. Gower. The functions of Orangeism were briefly outlined by the Grand Master for New Zealand, Wor. Bro. Smithers, Feilding, Orange principles, he said, stood for God, the King and the open Bible. The proceeds of the social are for the benefit of the £lO,OOO orphanage fund. GENERAL ITEMS. The fortnightly dance and euchre party held in the Tokaora hall on Tuesday evening attracted a fair attendance. In the euchre tourney the winners of the prizes were Miss V. Griffin and Miss N. Avery, and Messrs. Joyce and Jack Bolland. Excellent danco music was supplied by Mrs. Bennett. During the evening Mr. H. B. Taylor, chairman of the hall committee, presented Miss Ina Bolland, who is leaving the district, with an afternoon teaset. Missßolland hadalways been a tireless worker in connection with hall matters, he said. _ Mr. J. Bolland replied on behalf of his sister.

The first heifer safe of the season ou account of Mr. J. F. Stevenson, Manaia Road, was held by the Farmers’ Co-oper-ative Society on Wednesday. Despite the inclement weather there was a good attendance of buyers, particularly representatives from outside districts. About 250 heifers were sold, the average price being £l3 10s, individual prices ranging from £lO to £lB 10s. Mr. Stevenson will hold subsequent heifer sales at intervals of a fortnight.
