BURNSIDE.

GOOD DEMAND FOR STORES.

Dunedin, July 24.

Fat cattle were dearer at the Burnside stock sales to-day, but fat sheep were considerably cheaper than was the case last week. Only good lambs sold well, but most classes of store cattle showed a satisfactory increase on late rates. Pigs met with a good sale at lato rates.

There was a good yarding of fat sheep, numbering about 2200, 75 per cent, of which were ewes, mostly good. The quality on the whole was fair to good, with one outstanding truck of heavy sheep. Heavy wethers opened weakly, but there was a very fair sale with values up to Is below par. Medium wethers and ewes were generally easier, and heavy ewes fellb y from 2s to 3s per head. The operations of freezing buyers steadied the market somewhat. Best wethers made up to 58s 9d, prime to 48s, medium to 40s, and light to 355; heavy ewes brought 38s 9d, and medium 30s.

There was only a small entry of- fat lambs, 490 in all, and there -was a failsale for anything with any quality. Unfinished sorts were hard to sell. The best primes made to 345, and mediums to 30s.

The entry of fat cattle consisted of only 140 head of very fair quality, though the recent bad weather obviously affected the condition of many animals which would have been the better for a week or so longer on good pasture. The short supply, however, saved the day, and at the close of the sale values., were up by about 30s a head. The best bullocks made up to £24 17s Gd, with mediums bringing up to £2O; prime cows were worth up to £l4, and the best heifers, made from £l6 10s to £2O.

The store cattle yarding of 190 head was the smallest for weeks, but there was nothing to complain of in the sale. All classes, particularly butchers’ cow r s and heifers, found a ready sale at considerably increased prices. There was another good sale for all classes of fat pigs and stores at prices on a par with those ruling last week. LONDON WOOL SALES. ’ MURRAY, ROBERTS & CO’S REPORT. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co.
