SUCCESS OF DANNEVIRKE VICTORY GAINED IN LAST MINUTE; (VISITORS PLAY TARANAKI TO-DAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dannevirke, Last Night. Playing in fine weather on a fairly heavy /ground, Dannevirke scored a great victory over the Australian hockey team, snatching the game out of the fire in the last few minutes. It was a fast exhibition of hockey, the visitors giving a good display of stick-work, but Dannevirke put up a stubborn defence when the occasion demanded in the opening spell. The Australians drew first blood, about a quarter of an hour after starting, C. Cormie finding the net. This was the only score in the first half, in which both sides attacked in turn. *■ “On changing over Dannevirke started with a good attack and then slowed down. The spell was nearly half over before they made a great attack and McPherson equalised the scores with a great slanting shot. The hopes of the supporters of the home side were soon dashed to the ground when the Australians became aggressive and C. Cormie again sent in a hot shot which found the net.

The Australians at this stage were having the better of the contest and looked sure to. win. Then Dannevirke suddenly asserted themselves and provided the big crowd with plenty of thrills. There was great jubilation when Earl evened the scores with a fine shot, and with a couple of minutes to go McIntosh secured a meritorious victory for Dannevirke by sending in another fine goal, making the fourth of the match. •' In the last quarter of an hour the game was played at a great pace. Foreman, at centre half, was the star performer for the winhers, playing an outstanding game both in offence and defence. Mclntosh, Smith and Earl were prominent in the forwards. For the Australians Nettleton and Todkill were the most prominent of the backs and Pulley, C. Cormie and Stephens in the forwards. * The winners were the faster team but the wet state of the ground slowed the pace of the ball down, which suited Dannevirke. An alteration has been made in the New Zealand hockey team for the test match on Saturday. A. Mahoney (Wellington) replaces B. Morris, who is not available. The following reserves have been selected: A. Cave, C. H. Mclntyre ftnd G. V.- Connell, all of Wanganui. MATCH AGAINST TARANAKI. ARRANGEMENTS AT ELTHAM. The Australian team will reach Eltham before midday to-day and will have a full programme. If the weather is favourable, the Mayor (Mr. I. J. Bridger) will welcome the visitors at the railway station at 11.36 a.m. The team will then proceed to the Coronation Hotel, where luncheon will be taken and short speeches will be given,' the members of‘the team afterwards proceeding to their billets. After the match at Taumata Park in the afternoon the visitors will be tendered a dinner at the Central Hotel by the Taranaki Hockey Association. In the evening the visitors will be the guests of honour at a dance promoted by the Taranaki Association and the Eltham Men’s Hockey Club.
