NATIONAL ELECTRIC SUPPLY

PROFIT FROM UNDERTAKINGS.

By Telegraph—Press Association

Wellington, July 24. The power boards conference opened to-day, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., presiding. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, and the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates were present. Mr. Ransom, addressing the delegates, said he did not wish to dissociate Mr. Coates from the progress made. He had brought forward many of the big schemes now in hand. The Minister outlined the position with regard to various plans in operation and preparation, and dealt with the subject of charges. Statistics showed that all the undertakings had made a profit of £502,535 for the year ended March 31, after allowance had been made for operating and capital costs.

Mr.- Ransom stressed the importance of amalgamating the costs. The Tvhole position must bo considered as a national one and the units must be co-ordin-ated.

Mr. Coates said he saw no general difficulties in the way of progress. He considered that legislation preventing any local supply authority developing a scheme of its own would be beneficial.

Votes of thanks to the speakers were carried.
