STEREOTYPED MIGRATION

VIGOROUS PROTEST MADE SYSTEM DECLARED MISTAKE DEVELOPING EMPIRE IDEAL By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Australian Press Association. London, July 23. The Church of England Council on Empire settlement, promoted by Mr. A. West, St. Dunstan’s, was largely attended. It took place at Lambeth Palace, under the presidency of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and produced unexpected results. After platitudinous speeches by many clerical dignitaries Lord Somers suddenly and uninvitedly intervened with a vigorous protest against the existing stereotyped system of migration, under which Britain financially assisted penniless workers to transplant themselves ■in the Dominions. He declared it was a mistake to en- , courage the migration of the conventional penniless, workless type of migrants, who were no loss to the Motherland and no gain to the Dominions. If Britain wished to populate the Dominions why not migrate the second sons and other members of well-to-do families, who were prepared to prepay their passages and finance enterprises? “We want men who can go out with means ot their own, because they want to develop the Empire, not simply because tney want to earn a living,” he concluded.
