OTAKEHO AND RAMBLERS DRAW.

The hockey match played between Otakeho and'Ramblers at Hawera.yesterday resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. Despite the rough weather and muddy ground, the game was hard and fast. The sides attacked well, both sets of backs doing splendid work. About half-way through the second spell, Miss M. Woolliams (Ramblers) had a fall end had to leave the field. Mr. R. Good marksmanship was shown at the Hawera Miniature Rifle Club’s range on Tuesday evening, when shooting for the president’s trophy was completed. Miss K. Peterson, the winner, has achieved excellent results in this year’s shooting, and her popular win was well deserved. Palmer, Mountain Road, Normanby, as a result of an accident sustained by him on Dlonday. Dlr. Palmer was engaged in sawing wood by means of a circular saw, when the wood slipped, wit.i the result that his left- hand was almost severed at the knuckles. Inquiry to-day elicited the fact that Dlr. Palmer was progressing as favourably as could be expected, considering the serious nature of his injuries.

A meeting of those interested- in the provision of a dental clinic at Manaia school was held on Tuesday afternoon, when methods of raising money for the purpose were discussed. An offer of a loan of £6O to enable the project to be put in hand was made by Colonel T. C. Sutherland. An appeal will be made to parents and residents for funds and a further meeting will be held next week to complete arrangements.

Carpet and rug bargains extraordinary were obtained at; the auction sales J at the Winter Show Buildings, Hawera, yesterday. Owing to the number’ of lots offering, the auctioneers, Messrs R. P. Morrissey and Co., and E. Johnston and Co., could not complete the list, and many beautiful carpets and mgs may be purchased privately to-day and tomorrow at the show buildings. HURLEYVILLE NEWS. As the re-opening of the milking season approaches Harleyville residents who have been for holidays are returning. Mr. and Mrs. E. Hurley have returned from Auckland and Rotorua. Mrs. D. Hurley junr. and Miss Alary Hurley are visiting Wellington. Mrs. Dunbar has returned from Waitoitoi. The school team has been very successful at seven-a-sidc football. It won against Kakaramea and Paten B teams. Last week Alton A team visited Harleyville and played a closely-contested game. Sutherland scored a try for Alton but failed to convert, and there was no further score till the last few minutes of the game, when P. Hurley scored a try and kicked a goal, thus winning the game for Ilurleyville by two points. A number of spectators showed great enthusiasm over the thrilling finish.

The road from Alton to Ilurleyville is very rough. For a long time the residents have been urging the authorities to take the matter in hand. Their efforts have borne fruit for the material for tar-sealing is ready and the work will be proceeded with in the'spring.
