MARKETING OF PRODUCE

AMALGAMATED DAIRIES, LTD.

NEED FOR GREAT CAUTION URGED

CONTROL POLICY TOO DANGEROUS.

(By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night.

The operations of the new organisation, Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., was referred to by Mr. S. G. Smith in the House to-day.

Mr. Smith said that those behind Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., were trying, by eloquence only so far, to do what the control scheme had failed to do. Whatever was the reason for bringing about the downfall of dairy control,°the fact remained that it had cost the dairy farmers a couple of millions at least.

The Loader of the Opposition (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates): “A pure guess.” Air. Smith said that in the district where the leaders of Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., lived, the Waikato, he had heard on good authority that Is 6Jd per. lb. was being paid for butter-fat, whereas in Taranaki some factories had paid, a fraction over IGd. In the Stratford district it was estimated that the pay-, o ' for butter and cheese would be between Is 8d and Is 10d. How was it that the Waikato could not pay out such high prices as Taranaki?

He wanted to make sure that the Minister of Agriculture was watching the movement for the formation of Empire Dairies, Ltd., co as to prevent a recurrence of the disaster that had followed dairy control.
