FARMERS’ COMPETITIONS

JUDGING IN HUIRANGI DISTRICT.

In spite of increased entries the quality of the ensilage stacks entered in the Huirangi district farmers’ hay and ensilage competitions was found to be very high when they were judged by Mr. J. M. Smith, of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture. The quality of the hay, on the other hand, owing to bad seasonal conditions at the time of harvesting, was not so good as it might otherwise have been. The keen interest taken in the judging by a large number of farmers who formed the” party was no doubt accounted for by the fact that last year the Taranaki champion stack, that of Honnor Bros., came from the district. A big party assembled at the Huirangi Hall for luncheon, which was served by Mesdames W. Hall, R. Giddy and H. Mace.

Mr. W. Hall, president of the Huirangi branch of the Farmers’ Union, thanked Mr. Smith for having judged tlie competition again, and for the keen interest he had always shown and assistance he was always ready to give to the man on the land.

This was the second year, Mr. Hall said, that Huirangi had taken part in the competitions, and it was encouraging to see the great amount of interest taken in them, as evidenced by the large increase in entries. He stressed the value of the competitions, which afforded farmers splendid opportunities of visiting each other’s farms and exchanging ideas in the making of hay and ensilage and the growing of root crops.

Mr. Smith, in response, endorsed Mr. Hall’s remarks as to the great educational value of the competitions and extended hearty congratulations to the Huirangi district on the high average quality of the ensilage he had already judged. Last year the district had the distinction of winning the ensilage championship, a very meritorious performance, but, after all, it was far better to see all the stacks of high quality than to have one outstanding stack. Several stacks of ensilage and hay have not yet been opened, so that the following results of the day’s judging are not complete: — STACK ENSILAGE.
