MONEY FOR MAIN ROADS
ESTIMATES FOR THIS YEAR. DISTRICT HIGHWAYS COUNCIL. A meeting of the No, 7 .District High* ways Council was held at Stratford yesterday to consider the estimates to ba submitted to the Main Highways Board for approval. Applications from the various counties for. grants and subsidies on construction totalled £77,831, stated the chairman, Mr. P. Keller. In addition there was a claim for roads in the vicinity of large centres (£3 for £1 subsidy) of £20,012, making the total £97,843. On the other hand the Highways Board had for allocation £4s,soo‘(ordinary) and £7BOO (£3 for £1), totalling £53,300. The applications on the national fund were £81.408. In an endeavour to reduce the applications to approach the amount the board was prepared to allocate to the No. 7 district, the chairman went through the estimates item, by item. Members suggested work that, could stand over for this year or yvork that could be deferred as long as a small amount on account was granted for maintenance. The result was that the total applications were reduced to £69,237. It was decided, therefore, to make application to the Highways Board for £54,727 (ordinary) and £14,510 (£3 for £1) for construction .work. ) Maintenance applications made by the counties were: —Clifton £4658, Taranaki £5742, Inglewood £5976, Stratford £9990, Eltham £5450, Hawera £12,088, Waimate West £2178, Egmont £47.88, and Whangamomona £43'5; total, £76,305. Other applications were: —Boroughs: Waitara £1024, Inglewood £294, Stratford £1392, Eltham £720, Hawera £lO6. Town districts: Opunake £172, Manaia £228; Kaponga £144, Normanby £1033. Application will be made for the total of the above separate amounts, £81,408, for maintenance purposes. • i The council decided to urge the board to make representations to the Public Works Department to assist the Clifton county with the re-conditioning and maintenance of the Pukearuhe-Mokau stock track.
Those present at the meeting were the Public Works Department district engineer (Mr. P. Keller) chairman, Messrs. T. R. Anderson (Stratford county), A. L. Campbell (Eltham), J- 8. Connett (Taranaki), N. R. Cleland (Whangamomona), E. Washer (Hawera), H. A. Foreman (Clifton), A. Corkill (Inglewood), W. C. Green (Egmont) and E. Long (Waimate West).
