CHASE THROUGH CITY
ALLEGED BURGLAR CAPTURED. WHAT A SEARCH REVEALED. Auckland, July 21. Carrying a complete kit of burglar s tools, including gelignite, . fuses, and caps, Robert Slade, aged flu, of Hepburn Street,,, was arrested in sensational- circumstances following on an exciting chase through the city streets in the early hours of this morning. On’ being searched,. L 67 was found in his possession, and a large quantity Oi clothing was discovered later m room, much of which was identified as having been stolen. The arrest ■was made by Constable S. Wlnteheai, a new member of the force, and is regarded as one of the most outstanding arrests in Auckland for a long time. ,At 4.7 a.m. Constable Whitehead o served an elderly well-dressed man coming away from the door of a shop *n Hobson Street, and though there was nothing unusual in his demeanour, the early, hour made the constable regard, the man with suspicion, which was increased. by the way he hurried f 1 om the view of the police constable. The constable followed him and concealed himself in a doorway- Dater the padding of rubber-soled shoes tol him of the man’s return. When he saw him crossing the street the constable called out to him to, stop,- bu the man immediately broke into a nm. The constable gave chase, and the manscaled a sft fence near the Oddfel-: lows’ hall. When the constable reached, the back he was just in time to grasp his quarry as he was about to climb an iron fence. . At - the Police Station a search revealed a complete, outfit of burglar s tools, including a jemmy, a' catapult, and numerous lead pellets. Subsequently a search of the man’s room brought to light other articles, amongst them being race cards from clubs aL over New Zealand. . . Slade will appear in the Magistrate's Court to-morrow morning.
