BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

ROOT-GROWING COMPETITION

SOME EXCELLENT CROPS JUDGED.

RESULTS IN SOUTH TARANAKI.

Reporting in detail ou the root growing competitions the judges stated:—

The crops grown were mangolds and can As, and the seed and manure were again supplied by the Department of Agriculture. In mangolds, the variety used was Barres Stryno, a Danish strain which proved to be a good cropper, and generally showed excellent quality. The carrots were Matchless White, and these also proved to be very satisfactory. A pleasing feature was the absence of disease in both crops. The season on the whole was favourable, but of the 191 plots supplied, only 117 or 61.25 per cent, were carried through for judging. This shows a very large proportion of failures which is hard to account for considering the character of the season. About the usual number of plots were eaten out by stock, but it would appear that the majority of failures occurred at planting time, or in the early stages of n-rowth. The work done, however, iu all the plots judged was distinctly good and well up to the standard of previous years. ’ In mangolds, ths general average yield for the 56 plots weighed was 72 tons per acre, as against an average of 71 tons 12cwt for 65 plots last year. There were seven crops which exceeded 100 tons per acre, and a number of others close up. The champion crop of 181 tons

scwt per acre was grown by George Loving, of Huinga, and the next .best was x3B tons 17cwt per acre grown by Gladys .Taylor, of Fraser • Road school. In the carrot class, the general average yield of the 61 plot: weighed was 42 tons lewt per acre as compared to the average ot 3< tons ISewt for the 56 plots weighed last year. H. Goblin’s crop of 59 tons 12ewt per acre, though not the heaviest crop, wins the championship on points. The heaviest crop weighed out at the rate of 63 tons 9cwt per acre, and was grown by V Herman, of the Manaia Convent sch.-01.

Judging of the charts’ and test papers was carried out on the same basis as last year, viz, 20 points for chart and 20 points for a, test of the competitor’s knowledge of the growing of the crop. The general standard of the charts was again good, as indicated by the high average of 16.6 (the average last year was 16.3) but there are again this year a number of case where through loss of the printed instructions, details of seed and manure have not been correctly stated on the charts. The work on the test papers was only fair, the average marks being 13.8, as compared to 14.5 last year. The competitions and display were again staged at the Hawera Winter Show and were very favourably commented upon by the public and the Press for the good y elds and the excellent quality shown. The award for the best kept plot was given to Robert Anderson, of ■ Toko, whose plot was a model of neatness and good cultivation. Following are particulars of the championship awards: — MANGOLDS. In the senior division root growing competitions, with 2 acre plots, seed and manure were supplied free by the Department of Agriculture. Entries were again invited on the same conditions as last year, but the response was very poor only six entries were received as against 20 last year. Mangolds and carrots were decided upon for this class also, and the varieties were the same as for the junior class. The six .competitors were successful in getting, their crops established and carried through the season, and the quality of the crops when judged was distinctly good, and showed the young farmers had a good grasp of the methods of. cultivation required to insure success. The winning crop in mangolds, which weighed out at 95 tons ocwt per acre, was grown by Ron Taylor, of Fraser Road, and this crop is deserving of special mention for neatness and good cultivation. Lloyd and Jack Walker s and George Feather’s crops were also very good, the 4 mangold crops produc-

ing an average yield of 72 tons scwt per, I acre. The two carrot crops averaged 44 tons lOcwt per acre, and can be classed as fair.
