THAT FOOTBALL CHARGE

ACTION OF STRATFORD MAYOR. DOMAIN BOARD MAY MEET. It is understood that certain individual members of the Stratford Domain Board are not in accord with the Mayor’s action in connection with the steps he took to prevent the Rugby Union from making a charge of Is extra at the Stratford v. Star match on Saturday. There has been a good deal of talk on the subject and suggestions are now being made to call a special meeting of the Domain Board to consider the matter. It will be remembered that the union proposed, without, it is understood, making application to the Domain Board, to increase the usual charge to 2s and to devote half the proceeds to the earthquake relief fund. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) took the stand that as the charge was illegal it could not be proceeded with, and furthermore, that the public of Stratford had already been subjected to a house to house canvas for contributions to the fund, many having voluntarily given very liberally. He viewed the proposal of an arbitrary increase in the charge for admission to an ordinary competition match with, distaste, especially as tho union . itself would not be sacrificing any portion of its revenue. Had tho match been a special fixture with all or most of the gate to aid the relief funds, Mr. McMillan told a Daily News reporter that he would not have objected, and the use of the park might probably have been given free. Some members feel that no action should have been taken without the approval of the Domain Board as a whole.

CAR PARKING IN ELTHAM.

PRESENT SYSTEM QUERIED,

Car parking in the business area of Eltham formed a topic of discussion of the Borough Council meeting on Friday night. Councillors were dealing with the traffic inspector’s report, which contained a recommendation in favour of the retention of the present system of parking in the main streets. Or. Pepperell, introducing the question, stated he was not in favour of the present system of parking in the business area. Parking on both sides of the streets did not leave sufficient room, and he would like to see one side of the street free of cars. His opinion was that accidents would happen while the present system was in vogue. That parking should be restricted to one side of the main streets was tne opinion of Cr. Lewis, who stated it was his intention to move in that direction at the next council meeting. Failing the adoption of this method, he would move that Bridge Street between High and Stauners Street should be declared a non-parking area. The Mayor stated that as a result oi tests carried out he was satisned that there was sufficient room. Accidents would happen whatever was done, They could not prevent cars from being parked in the streets for a period-of forty, minutes, and it was an easy matter for car drivers to move their cars and repark. There were only a few parking places on the south side of Bridge Street. What Cr. Pepperell objected to, he said, was the dangerous practice of cars being stopped alongside those already parked. This closed the discussion, the maUer to be revived at a subsequent meeting.
