beginning of new series S. McCANN SCORES FROM SCRATCH. G. SOLE AND HUGHES WIN GRADES Under the auspices of the New Plymouth League Cycle Club, three road races were decided on Saturday, in each instance the race marking the beginning of a new series. The seniors raced through Waitara to the Waipa factory and back, the grade races being run on tho same road, over shorter distances. The senior race provided a great struggle between Sid. McCann and R. Yardley and the former won by the narrow margin of a length, with the othei s well UP Crowds watched the riders go through Waitara, where the borough inspector facilitated progress by having the traffic under control. The following officials were on duty: Judges, Messrs. E. Knofflock and W. Yardley; starter and time-keeper, Mr. A. George; committee, Messrs. G. Tippins, R.°Aroa: secretary and road steward, Mr. D. George; turn steward. Mr. W. Brewster. Results are: —•

At "Waitara going out, Roy Sole and Wigg together led from Gilbert and Beer” then came Taunt, later ClafTey. Bellringer, Lehrke and Ellis were next together' about 40sec. ahead of the scratch men. At the turn Sole and Wigg led by 45sec. from Beer and Gilbert; 55see later came Bellringer, Ellis and Lehrke, Claffey turned next. The scratch men were 32sec behind Bellringer and company. The field slowly closed up and the scratch men took the lead responsible for a fast pace there. The three scratch men and Roy Sole were leaders, but Bellringer, Ellis and Lehrke caught the leaders again at Bell Block. The final sprint saw S. McCann win by a length from Yardley, with Bellringer two lengths back third. Aroa was close up fourth. Aroa slipped all over the road at the finish and lost his final chance, a shower just previous causing the wetness of the road. Cup points are: S. McCann, 5; R. Yardley, 3; Bellringer, 2; Aroa, 1.

Fox .was fourth to turn, then came a bunch Including Berryman (riding with nice style), Hook and Hughes. Stevens was next, closely followed by Newell and Tuffery, the latter riding the best of the scratch boys. Martin took the lead at the golf links and led until the saleyards, Waiwakaiho, where Berryman, Hughes and Hook took the lead. Hughes won by two lengths from Berryman, Hook being 100 yards further back just ahead of Martin.

Also started. —J. McMillan and C. Henry (scr.), B. Sole (4mm). Roberts caught the 30 see bunch at Bell Block, the scratch men being then about 20sec behind. C. Henry (scr.) was not fit, being affected by the ’flu recently. At the turn B. Sole led by Imin lOsec from G. Sole, H. Parker, L. Tuffery and L. Roberts together, the scratch men being 20scc behind the latter bunch. B. S6le was caught passing the aerodrome, while the scratch men were losing ground against the wind. The order was tho same to the finish, G. Sole winning by a length from Roberts, who beat Parker- by two lengths, Tuffery close up next. Cup points are: G. Sole 4, L. Roberts 4, Parker 2, Tuffery I.
