JIMMY HOUSE FASTEST SENIOR. ; For the Varnham Cup, the third race of the series of amateur road cycle races in New Plymouth, took place from Windy Point to the Oakura Hotel and back. The distance was 13J miles, and the winner, R. Gardiner, on the 2min. 45sec. mark, rode in an easy winner. “Jimmy” Horne made fastest time to fill fourth place. Following are the results: — SENIORS. R. Gardiner (2niin. 41min. LSsec. • I J. Donaldson (45sec.), 40min. 32see. 2 L. Heatley (25sec.), 40min. 13sec. .. 3 J. Horne (scr.), 39min. 50sec 4 Also started —N. Gardiner, H. Peel, H. Cavaney (sen.), and L. Reed. Seven in aff faced the starter. N. Gardiner and H. Peel were first away and were soon lost from sight. R. Gardiner and Cavaney were next to follow and they rode in that order till well past the turn. N. Gardiner, w ho was having his first ride this season, had a spill in the loose surface on a bend of the road, causing his retirement from the race in the early stages. A passing motorist picked him up and brought him in. The fields had closed up by the time Omata was reached.’ Then the bun -b. with the exception of R. Gardiner, n. . a flock of sheen coming from town and a mob of cattie coming from Omata. Gardiner just managed "to get through befora they met, but the other riders were not so lucky, and they all had to stop. L. Reed came to grief when endeavouring to stop for the mob of cattle, which cost him a favourable chance of getting a place. This misfortune on the road made it impossible to catch R. Gardiner, who rode home to the finish with ease. The judges were bustled to sort out second and third, as Donaldson, Heatley and Horne came in a bunch. Donaldson was successful in gaining second place from Heatley by a. length. Horne, a similar distance further back, was fourth.

The senior points are: L. Reed 7, <T. Horne 7, L. Heatley 6, R. Gardiner 5, J. Hutchinson 4, J. Donaldson 3, H. Cavaney 1. BOYS’ RACE. The boys’ race was set out over a course of 3J miles, a good field entering for the event. The results are:—H. Snowden (scr.), 7min. lOsec. .... 1 G. Tippins (45sec.), 7min. 50 l-ssec. 2 T. Horner (50sec.), 7min. 58sec. .. 3 H. Cavaney (junr) 4 Also started —L. Ryan, C. Ryan, J. Henderson, P. McKechnie,_R. Hookham, B. Barlow, J. and V. Millman. The boys are a very keen and with J. Withers and T. Horner it made things very interesting. McKcchnie and the two boys were first to turn for home, but the back, markers were rapidly closing on their lead before the turn into the straight. Withers, Barlow and Cavaney -were with the leading bunch. Snowden, the scratch man, was coming up with his usual turn of speed. A bunch of five or six riders were together 100 yards from the judge. Tippins and Horner were having great go for first place. Cavaney coeih-i ed to be tired when it came to the real business. Snowden was successful in i shaking off Tippins, getting the by half a wheel, Horner a length awaJ third. Cavaney had to be contented with fourth. B The points for the boys’ race are:-B
