BURGLARIES IN SHOPS

SEVERAL NEW PLYMOUTH CASES. Left closed and locked on Thursday evening, the shops of P. J. Lovell, cycle dealer, and V. R. Simpkiss, grocer, Liardet Street, were discovered' yesterday morning to have been entered during the night. A few shillings in cash and several tins of cigarettes were missing. To effect au entrance the back windows, in both cases it is believed, had been smashed with a rod of steel about five feet long, which had been sta. cling in the yard aisthe rear of Mr. Simpkiss’ shop. When the places were examined yesterday this rod was found in the yard of Mr. Lovell’s premises, and footmarks were noticed in tho soft ground near both the ’broken windows. A 10ft. wall between the two places must have been scaled in getting from one place to the other. It is not thought that anything has been stolen from Mr. Lovell’s shop, for his till contained only 2Jd, and it was still there yesterday morning, but it had been opened. Two half-crowns had been taken from Mr. Simpkiss’ till, which had been left open, and ten tins of 50 cigarettes were missing. Littered about the shop were some papers which had been in a cash box. It is understood that the tea kiosk at Pukekura Park was also entered and that chocolates and cigarettes were stolen, while it is believed that at St, Joseph’s School, Moturoa, some person entered the building and removed certain contents.
