MATAU. j _ (From Our Own Correspondent). Tho usual fortnightly euchre party and dance was held here last Friday night. Owing to other attractions there was not as large an attendance as usual although those present thoroughly enjoyed, themselves. Koon interest was taken in the play-off for the ladies’ euchre prize, three ladies having gained equal points, Mrs. 0. Wolfsbauer. Miss D. Jensen and Miss Una Webb, the latter finally annexing tho prize. The gent's prize was won by Mr. AV. Bertrand (Purangi). Two earthquake shocks were felt here on the 15th instant, one at 8.25 p.m. and tho other shortly afterwards. ’Flu is still very prevalent in this district, several people having been confined to their bods. The long night dance, whicJi was held in the Matau hall on the 17th instant, ■was quite a success. Two novelty dances were competed for, the lucky spot waltz being won by Mr. A. Coulter and Miss D. Rawlinson, and the Monte Carlo waltz by Air. A. Smellie and Miss M. Larsen. Music was supplied by Messrs. W. Rawlinson, A. Smellie, J. Moody and E. Randle. A dainty supper was supplied by the ladies. Mrs. R. Chapman is the guest of her mother-in-law, Mrs. F. Chapman. Messrs. 11. and C. Seymour and N. Larsen, of Wairarapa, are the guests of Mr. and Airs. 11. Larsen.
