LIFE-SAVING IN TARANAKI

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' AWARDS. PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. Members of the Taranaki Life-Saving Centre visited the Girls’ High School yesterday morning io present the trophies won by the girls during the summer season. Air. W. Brodie, president of the centre, was present and was supported by Messrs. W. N. Stephenson. F. J. Eggleton, P. J. Flannagan and L. Frethey (secretary). Air. Brodie thanked the acting principal, Alias AlcLean, for affording them the opportunity of presenting the certificates, and called upon Air, Stephenson, a past president of the centre, to make the presentations. Air. Eggleton also congratulated the recipients, and said that he would like to sea the number trebled next year. The greatest thing a person could do was to save life t and to do this 0110 had

to carry the requisite knowledge to enable one to do so. To show the value of life-saving he instanced the occurrence on the East End beach last summer, when a boy would undoubtedly have lost his life but for the efforts of two young men skilled in life-saving. For these the society had succeeded in obtaining suitable recognition from the Royal Humane Society. Mr. Eggleton said he looked on swimming as being just as important as ordinary school lessons. Swimming, and more especially life-saving, developed the body and resulted in a person acquiring a good upright carriage. The girls’ school was a good way from the baths, but nevertheless they could in their spare time practise methods of release, etc. He impressed on both teachers and scholars the great value of life-saving, and again expressed the hope that the number of certificates would be much greater next, season.
