QUESTIONS IN THE HOUSE

• MINISTERS MAKE REPLIES AMENDMENT OF GAMING ACT. . CONDITIONS IN P.W.D. CAMP. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Petitions presented in the House of Representatives to-day again included many asking for an amendment of the Gaming Act. The Hon. A. E. Ransom, replying to Mr. R. Semple, said the death of a man •it the Palliser Bay Public Works camp could bi no way be attributed to the conditions there. The work had been undertaken hurriedly in difficult localities and, in addition to these obstacles, the position had been aggravated by bad weather. However, the department had made all possible arrangements for the shelter of mon, and tho unfortunate death was not the outcome of any neglect.

The Hon. J. B. Donald, replying to Mr. A. E. Ansell, said the Government was dissatisfied with the position in relation to the South Island steamer service to Melbourne and would take steps to remedy the trouble. Mr. Ansell complained that the Manuka had been withdrawn from the service for overhaul and there had been no steamer for several weeks. He requested the Government to expedite the restoration of the service.

In answer to Mr. J. S. Fletcher, the Hon. W. A. Veitch said he was not in a position to say when the unemployment committee would have completed its work. Ho considered it would be unwise for the Government to request the committee to present its report before it had had time to deal thoroughly with tho matter.
