SERIOUS CHARGE MADE
ROBBERY AND VIOLENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A charge of robbery with personal violence was preferred against John Henry Percival Hagarty, aged 28, before Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., to-day. Hagarty was charged that on July 4, 1929, he robbed David Hamilton Weir Curry of a watch and chain valued at £l7 10s and £3 in money, and that immediately before doing so he used personal violence towards Curry. Evidence for the Crown was that Curry, a farmer from Akaroa, went for a walk with a friend on the evening of July 4, when be was struck on the head, rendered unconscious, and robbed of his watch and money. Next evening, it was alleged, accused was arrested for drunkenness, and the watch and chain were found in his possession. It was also alleged that when arrested the accused tried to throw away the watch and chain. Hagarty pleaded not guilty end was committed for trial.
