TARANAKI HUNT CLUB

HOUNDS MEET AT MOTONUI.

SPLENDID DAY'S SPORT OBTAINED.

(By

“Moturoa.”)

Gloriously fine weather favoured the members of the Taranaki Hunt Club when they met at Mr. Percy Coles, Motonui, yesterday and over splendid hunting property an exhilarating outing was experienced. In the early part of the afternoon, the mounted followers did not have much riding to do, the only kill giving no run at all, but at about 3 o'clock a fine, strong hare was raised and Huntsman Sexton tells the writer that the quarry ran for the best part of an hour and led the pack and followers over six or seven miles of difficult country. The hounds cast off at Mr. Percy Cole’s, working up the creek and over the point-to-point course, where the pack picked up the scent and pulled down the hare in the creek, the kill being secured without a run.

The hounds were taken across to the top of the cliff, working without success down the creek and into the furze. The scent was strong in the furze, but the quarry could not be moved and the pack went over to the cliff on Mr. Preston’s, working round back to Mr. P. Cole’s again where a hare was sighted crossing the top of the hill. She ran down into the creek where there was a slight check. The hare was viewed again cutting along the creek to the sea. . The hounds were called back and soon picked up the scent, carrying the field back along the top of the cliff, past the Maori cemetery and down past the furze again. In full cry, the hounds set a hot pace across the properties of Messrs. Preston, Taylor and Fitzsimmons. Here the hare doubled back and then turned along a gorse fence, up the hill and along the flat, turning along the edge of the furze patch on Mr. P. Cole’s, where the hounds were again checked. The pack thoroughly worked the broken furze on the creek flat, and although the hare lay very quiet, they eventually roused her out and raced across the Nikoriina Road, over Mr. Preston’s in the direction of the factory, doubling back over the main road through Mr. Cole’s and again crossing the main road to the creek. The hounds were soon hot on the trail and viewed puss crossing the creek and running back over the point-to-point course. The hare ran. down to the creek again and then turned over the hill through Mr. Robinson’s. The quarry came back along the creek where it was originally started from, but the hounds were again checked and as the night was closing fast, Master Chaney gave the word to “pack up” and the merry party adjourned to Mr. Percy Cole’s homestead where they were hospitably entertained at a welcome afternoon tea.

In expressing the appreciation of the members of the Hunt Club of Mr. Cole’s hospitality, Master B. H. Chaney stated that the day had not begun too well, but the final run had fully recompensed their disappointment and a long gallop had found a splendid hare just too strong for them. Mr. Cole, “Percy” as ho is popularly known, was one of the finest sports in the club, and ho could instance many occasions when his good nature prompted him to give up liis mount to followers who were unfortunately on foot. Mr. Cole briefly replied and was made the recipient of a salvo of cheers. Among the mounted • followers were Master B. H. Chaney on Koru, Huntsman J. Sexton on Ginger, the whip (Mr. E. Rook) on Civility, Miss D. Newton on Lady Shimose, Miss H. Cole on Nimblcfoot, Miss M. Cole on Passport, Miss Halcombe on Larikau, MisS Parli on Ceres, Miss T. Cole on Penelope, Miss A.
