Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltdare in receipt of the following wool market cablegram from their London agents, dated July 16: Improved competition. Continent buying fairly freely. Greasy Merino, scoured Merino, best and crossbred greasy market shows a hardening tendency. ADDINGTON SALE. GOOD DEMAND FOR BEEF. Christchurch, July 17. Good-sized entries were the rule today at Addington, and there was a good ‘safe, particularly- for beef, which showed a further advance. Store sheep. —The entry was about the same as last week, and included a number of lines of station sheep. The quality showed a big improvement, particularly among the grown ewes. One line of North Canterbury six-tooth halfbreds sold at 435, the highest figure for many weeks. Values all round were on a par with Inst week’s sale. Medium crossbred ewe hoggets made 25s to ?Cs, halfbred wether hoggets 15s 6d to 17s 3d, inferior wether hoggets 12s to 14s. extra good 6-tooth crossbred ewes to 435, good full-mouthed crossbred ewes to 33s 6d, aged crossbred ewes 15s 6d to 18s, good full-mouthed halfbred ewes 33s to 34s 3d, ordinary sound-mouthed halfbred ewes 26s to 28s, good full-mouthed quarterbred. ewes to 35s 6d, extra good halfbred wethers to 31s 6d, good halfbred wethers 26s to 275, extra good crossbred wethers to 32s 3d.

Fat sheep. —There was more than a normal entry, and the sale was practically identical with the preceding week, big ewes selling a little more freely. Extra prime weathers made to 42s Id. prime 34s to 37s 6d. medium 31s to 33s 6d. light. 27s to 30s 6d, extra prime ewes to 36s 7d, prime 29s to 33s 6d, medium 24s to 28s, light 21s to 23s 6d, aged ewes 17s to 20s.

Fat cattle. —The yarding was a little bigger than last week, comprising 480 head. There was quite a fair proportion of well-finished beasts forward. The sale was a keen one throughout, and values showed a further advance of fully 20s a head all round. Extra heavy prime steres made to £23 12s 6d. show bullock £29 7s 6d, heavy prime steers £2O to £22 10s, medium weight prime steers £l7 5s to £l9 10s, medium quality steers £l4 5s to £l7, light steers £l2 5s to £l4; extra prime heifers to £lB 7s Gd, prime heifers £l3 15s to £l6, medium heifers £ll to £l3 10s, light heifers £B-10s to £lO 15s; extra prime cow’s to £l6 12s Gd, prime cows £l3 to £l5, medium cows £lO to £l2 15s, light and aged cows £7 7s 6d to £9 10s. Vealers.—The entry was a small one and anything good sold well at last week's rates. Best 12 to 18-nionths sorts made to £lO 6s, good vealers £7 to £B. calves 20s to 47s 6d.

Store cattle. —Small lines of yearling heifers sold at £4 Ss 6d. A good coloured pen of cows at £7 3s Gd, and 18months steers at £6 13s 6d. The sale was a good one. Dairy cattle. —The entry of dairy cattle also was sniail, and for the most part of indifferent showing. Values generally were equal to late rates. Best cows made to £l6.

Fat pigs.—Both porkers and baconers were in small supply and met with a good sale at the previous week’s values. Choppers made £3 10s to £6 2s Gd, baconers £3 10s to £4 12s 6d, ex'tra heavy to £4 19s 6d (average price per lb 64d to 7<d); porkers 42s to 555, heavy porkers 57s 6d to £3 7s Gd (average price per lb 8d to Bjd). Store pigs.—Prices for store pigs showed little change. The entry was small and the quality “very mixed. Large stores made 25s to 2Ss Gd, medium 21s to 23s 6d, small 18s to 19s Gd, weaners 8s to 18s Gd. LIVE STOCK MARKETS. JOHNSONVILLE SALE. DEMAND FOR SHEEP SLACK. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on the .Johnsonville sale held this week as follows:—To an average attendance of the public we submitted a fair yarding of cattle and small yarding of sheep. With the exception of a few pens of heavy bullocks, the quality of the cattle was not up to the usual standard. Prices for prime heavy weights were on a par with light rales, but plain and unfinished sorts were not in demand. A consignment of good quality vealers met with a keen sale. Following on the winter show stock sale, the majority of the butchers wer fully supplied, and the demand for sheep at this week’s sale was slack. We quote: Heavy bullocks, £l7 10s, £lO 10s, £l6 7s 6d, £l6 ss; prime bullocks, £l5 lis Gd, £l5 las, £l5 10s, £l5 ss; plain and light bullocks, £l4 to £l4 15s; vealers, £5 ss, £5 2s, £4 15s, £4 2s, £3 2s Gel; extra heavy wethers 41s 6d; prime wethers, 38s 3d and 3Gs’ 9d; heavy ewes, 30s 9d, 30s, 29s 9d. BURNSIDE SALE ADVANCE IN FAT CATTLE. Dunedin, July 17. There was a noticeable advance in values for fat cattle at the Burnside stock sales to-day, while the demand for sheep was good at adi anced rates, There was little change in the lamb market, but prices were if anything a shade easier. Prime wethers sold .to 495, medium 40s to 435, light 31s to 31s 9d; prime ewes 37s to 395, medium 30s to 335, light 29s 9d to 28s. Prime sheep sold on a basis of 7d. The lambs yarded comprised 370, ot medium and fair quality. The demand for prime lambs was fairly brisk, but unfinished • sorts met with a dull sale. Primo lambs sold to 32s 9d, medium 29s 7d. unfinished 23s to 255. The price per }b for light lambs was lOd, and about Sd for heavy animals. The store cattle entry consisted ot L>o head the penning including about 40 head of young mixed animals, the balance being cows and heifers.
