PUTTING OFF EVIL DAY
PLAN OF NEGRO MURDERESS IMPRISONMENT FOR PETTY THEFT SHORT LEASE OF LIFE OBTAINED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Paris, July 16. La Fortune, the negro dancer who was sentenced to death for murder, has .succeeded in putting off her day of execution by getting herself sentenced to two years’ imprisonment at the Paris Assizes for stealing six shillings. La Fortune’s lawyer brought up the trivial misdemeanour in order to obtain a delay in the death sentence. The negress had the right of appeal, but this cannot be heard for three months. Thus she is certain of at least three months lease of life, or two years, if she does not appeal, for under the French law she must serve the imprisonment before she can be executed.
