COURSING AT PATEA

DECISION OF TWO EVENTS. DISEASE AFFECTING DOGS. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the coursing meeting conducted by the Patca-Hawera Coursing Club at Whenuakura yesterday. Despite the smallness of the number of entries there was a fair attendance of enthusiasts, and some interesting courses were witnessed. The sport is experiencing a particularly unfortunate season owing to the ravages of a disease amongst dogs, and a number of the dogs competing yesterday were obviously suffering from the effects of the complaint. 2k number of animals have died since the last meeting. Although there were only 16 entries, they included representatives from all parts of the province. To Secretary F. McKenna and his helpers credit is due for the success of the meeting. Two events only were contested, completing the programme in one day. The events were the Morrissey Cup, presented by Mr. R. P. Morrissey, Hawera, a maiden event, won by Messrs Hurley and Willis Bros.’ Diamond Blot, and the V.C. Clock, presented by the V.C. Brewery Co., Hawera, an open event, won by Mr. W- J* Jeffrey’s Golden Morn Results are as follows: —

CITY (16) DEFEAT OHANGAI (11). FAST, EXCITING FORWARD PLAY. Fortunes fluctuated quickly in a seesaw Rugby game at the Hawera showgrounds in which City (16) defeated Ohangai (11) after a fast and exciting though scarcely spectacular contest, chiefly confined to loose forward rushes. There was not the difference of five points between the teams on the play. City scored first when Bryant fell on the ball from a forward drive. E. Hart’s kick failed. Jimmy Hinga made a good run and put Ohangai on the attack. A City man speculated, J. Lee gathering and potting, but the ball fell short. A City man was off-side at the twentyfive and J. Lee equalised the scores with a good kick. Ward cut round the blind side of the scrum, fooled the opposition and gave to Morrissey, who ran along the line and behind the posts to score. An easy kick made the score B—3 as half-time sounded.

A loose breakaway by the City forwards from half-way on. the right wing ended at the corner flag on the left wing, Ohangai being unable to clear. Lee punted high and the City full-back was beaten by the bounce to enable G. Lander to gather while in his stride and score. Lee goaled and the scores were equal. Church broke away from halfway, City hurriedly speculating to line at the corner. The line-out developed into a ruck, Jerry Hinga scoring. The kick failed. History repeated itself. Morrissey stab punted; the bounce beat J. Lee, and Morrissey gathered in to score. The kick failed and the scores were equal, 11 —11. Ritter’ broke away and flung behind when tackled. Barron secured and scored. Morrissey converted, making the scores 1G —11. P. O’Shea intercepted from a City passing essay near his line and put Ohangai on the attack with a short kick over the fullback’s head. Morrissey potted a goal but a player had touched the ball in its flight. The game ended with the scores:
