AFRICAN’S GALLANT FIGHT WINNERS’ LAST WICKET RECORD. WOOLLEY’S CHANCELESS INNINGS. Australian Press Association. United Service. London, July 16. Although South Africa’s position seemed hopeless when play was resumed in the third test, which England has won, the last three wickets added 159. Owen-Smith scored the highest for South Africa in test matches. England’s last wicket added 103, another record. England won by five wickets. To-day’s play was the most exciting of the three days. Owen-Smith was dropped three times. He hit two sixes and 15 fours, and broke his bat. Woolley eventually caught him at point. The tourists indomitable spirit won an ovation at the close of their innings. England, wanting 184 to win, lost Sutcliffe and Hammond with the total at 13, half the side being out cheaply. Owen-Smith further distinguished himself by catching Sutcliffe. The Africans fielded nobly and kept runs down. Woolley played a chanceless innings. He hit eight fours, and had the satisfaction of making the winning hit. His partnership with Tate added 76 in 40 minutes. The scores arc:—
