LIMIT OF PROTECTION
POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, July 15. A committee of five experts appointed by the Prime Minister to report upon Australian tariffs has issued a report. It considers that some o.f the applications and the extension of protections have been wasteful and cost more than the benefits gained. The committee declared that the adoption of a considerable amount of protection was justified oh economic grounds, and Australia, with its present population, had enough resources to stand the. strain, nevertheless, the limit of protection had now been reached. Australian products had cost £36,000 more than the same goods would have done if imported duty free into the Commonwealth. The report, on the other hand, refers to the general contribution of protection to national happiness and prosperity.
