EXPENSES OF POWER BOARD

HOW WERE THE RATES SPENT?

How had the South Taranaki Power Board spent the rates it collected from the Hawera Borough Council? Councillor W G Walkley asked that question at the Hawera Borough Council meeting on Monday night. The Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey), who is also a member of the board, retorted to the query. Cr. Walkley said he did not remember havino- seen the figures. The Mayor: “1 don’t suppose you have or will. We don’t get from the Hospital Board or the Patea Harbour Board particulars as to how the money levied from us is spent.” Cr. W. G. Simpson pointed out that the Hospital Board every year forwarded a balance-sheet. “The money,” stated the Mayor, “was spent 1 in preliminary arrangements and working the board up to a state where some day it might function.” - Cr. Walkley: “They have already collected £3OOO, and there is £6500 to be borrowed. The man in the street thinks the preliminary expenses total £6500, whereas they amount to £10,000.” Cr. Simpson expressed regret that the board had not furnished the council with more information as to its proposals.
