OKOKE NEWS

SCOTTISH SOCIAL EVENING.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

“Alma, field of heroes, hail, Alma, gloria to the Gael,” There came the skirl of the pipes, dear to the heart of every Scotchman, and Okoke listened to this new and greatly appreciated attraction for this district, as Pipers J. Nahm and Bruce Henderson, of the Ilawera Pipe Band, marched majestically up and down the Okoke hall, while the walls echoed with the music of Scotland. Despite the inclement weather there was a good attendance at the function, arranged by the local hall and school committees last Saturday evening. The entire programme went with a swing, the dances being interspersed with concert items, commencing with pipe items by the visiting pipers. Miss Doreen Nairn, a talented and bemedalled Highland dancer, delighted the assembly with a Highland Hing, seantriubhas, sword dance and sailors’ hornpipe,, every ■ item receiving hearty applause. The pipers played several marches and Scottish airs, and further delighted those present by contributing a waltz to the programme. Mr. C. Barham received a tumultuous ovation when he contributed two vocal numbers, “The Chief of Te Whitau” and “Pilgrims of the Night.” Mr., R. West contributed two songs, “Where my Caravan has Rested,” and “Don’t You Remember the Time.” In thanking The visitors for journeying such a long way to entertain the local people, Mr. A. McKeown assured the visitors that the programme had been very greatly appreciated, and the local people would look forward keenly to a further visit. Mr. McKeown made a presentation to Miss D. Naim and then called for cheers for the visitors, which were given in no uncertain manner, the company singing “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” The music for the dance programme was played by Mrs. H. McLellan and Mr. Gordon Fraser, while an extra waltz was played by the pipers. Messrs. E. Holley and A. McKeown were efficient masters of ceremonies, while the supper arrangements) in the hands of the local ladies, left nothing to be desired.
