BURGLAR USES FIREARM
CHRFSTCHURCH SENSATION BUSINESS MAN FINDS INTRUDER. CAPTIVE SHOOTS WAY 7 TO LIBERTY SEARCH OF PREMISES FRUITLESS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. When Edward Hammond, of Hammond and Turner, hardware merchants, Oxford Terrace, visited the firm’s premises about 9.30 this evening he surprised an intruder in the store at the back of the shop. He caught the intruder, a young man, and was taking him to the front door to hand him over to the police when the captive drew a firearm and shot Mr. Hammond in the back. He then bolted towards the rear of the premises. Mr. Hammond managed to struggle on to the footpath, where he called to passers-by telling them he was shot. The police were at once informed and when they arrived a thorough search of the premises was made but without any trace of the man being found. After receiving medical attention Mr. Hammond was removed to hospital. He ie suffering from a wound in the back and shock, but his condition is not serious.
He states that the man appeared to be about 20 years of age with a very pale complexion, about 6ft. in height and of* very slight build.
