CHURCH AND STREET CORNER

QUESTION’ OF LAND DEDICATION. SUNDAY PARADES OF THE COUNCIL What is the attitude of the council towards its church parades? This is my fourth year in New Plymouth and. though there have been several parades of the council at other churches, none has been at St. Andrew’s.”

With this paragraph the Rev. J. D. McL. Wilson concluded a letter on the dedication of street corners read at the meeting of the Borough Council last night. Mr. Wilson said that as soon as a congregational meeting had considered the dedication of the corner of Liardet and Courtenay Streets, tho decision would be conveyed to the council. He reminded the council that it had not yet signified its approval of the plan for slight alterations to the church property at the corner of Liardet and Courtenay Streets, though th© proposal had been before the council some months.

“As this - matter has nothing to do with the dedication of the corner,” continued Mr. Wilson, “and as you have already had the assurance of the minister and office-bearers of St. Andrew’s

Church that, in any case, there will bo a levelling of the section so that there will be an unobstructed view for about 30 feet back from the corner, we ask you kindly to hasten matters. “I shall be glad of your answer to the following query; Has the council asked St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s to dedicate the corners of their sections, and what has been their reply?” Cr. R. J. Pentecost: Has ho made an application for the council to attend church parades? The Mayor said that it was arranged that Mr. Wilson would call a meeting of his congregation, and that he would let the council know the decision reached. The council had not yet received a reply, but as soon as it did it would deal with the matter. Ho explained that St. Joseph’s Church had already given a corner and that the other churches would be asked. Councillors had attended church parades when invited, he continued, but as far as he knew no invitation had been received from St. Andrew’s.
