MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT

STRATFORD COUNCIL MEETING. WORK OF THE PAST MONTH. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night, when the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) presided. Councillors A. Nelson, C. Moore, R. F. Harkness, P. Thomson, A. H. Trotter, J. McKee, R. Tyrer, and D. J. Malone were also present. The borough foreman reported that the stall had been mostly employed on general maintenance work, cleaning footpaths, etc. The water tables had been cleaned in practically every street in the borough. Celia Street had been scarified, re-shaped and rolled. A small tilling had been put in near the Swansea Road bridge with the intention of improving the corner. A good deal of metal patching had been done on the metalled .roads, but owing to continual ram he found it hard to keep this class of work up to standard. All tarred roads had been repaired as required A temporary fence had been erected along Hamlet Street near the dump. In King Edward Park all the outside fences had been repaired along Page Street, Brecon Road, Hamlet Street, and between the clearing and the park along Regan Street, 300 new posts and 9 cwt of new wire had been used on this work. The football and hockey fields had been marked out in Victoria Park as required by the different clubs. The football ground had been rolled twice during the month. All the concrete posts around the football ground had been painted. The wooden gates had been painted on the Cordelia Street entrance, and also at the Orlando Street entrance. All the footpaths had been cleaned, and the trees along the western and’ northern sides had been trimmed.

Except for the evening of June 19, when all the district suffered as the resuit of a strong gale, interruptions totalling two hours, the bulk supply had been steady with the voltage very good, reported the electrical engineer "(Mr. A. E. Moss). Units purchased totalled ’ "7,700, peak load was 410, with a load factor of 50. The early dark days had been the cause of a large increase in units used for lighting. Six meters were tested on complaints, but in each case were correct to within one per cent. The rough weather of June 19 had been responsible for a numoer of house service lines twisting to-o-ctner and breaking off. A larger number than usual of street lamp renewals had been necessary from the same cause. The increase of outlet points reported for the mouth included heating 7, lighting 15. Stock had been reduced by £ll7 during the month and material -had come to hand to covei prior oraers (£73). The revenue account for May showed £•291 outstanding at the beginning of the month (£269 last year); gross, £1678 (£1404); discount, £343 (£286); cash £l2Ol (£1087); outstanding at the end’of the month, £425 (£299). A total of 2602 books had been issued during the month, and of these 2551 had been returned, reported the librarian (Mr. A. S. Martin). New books added numbered 37 and new subscribers 16, and subscriptions amounted to i-3 17s 6d. „ The Mayor produced comparative, figures in connection with the electricity department showing that the. total number of units purchased during 1928-29 was 1,451,956, whereas in 192-J-26 the total was only 406,000. The total average cost per unit sold had been 1./Bd, revenue having been 2.21 d.

RESIGNATION OF CR. McKEE.

In tendering his resignation from the Stratford Borough Council, owing to his having been transferred to Hawera, Cr. J. McKee thanked the Mayor and councillors for the courtesy that had been shown him during his term of office. He had lived for six years in btratford, and the term had been a very pleasant one for him. If the potentialities of Stratford were fully explored the town would soon become one of great importance. Cr. McKee’s leaving would be a loss to Stratford, as he had revealed ability in his position as a councillor, said the Mayor, who deeply regretted, that Cr. McKee was compelled to resign. He hoped Mr. McKee would experience a happy and prosperous future in his new h °Other councillors expressed similar sentiments.

The following team has been selected to represent the North Taranaki ladies in the match against South Taranaki, which will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Australian-Taranaki match at Eltham on July 25: —Goal, M. Burkhardt (Inglewood) j full-backs, Q. Gemhoefer (Inglewood), P. Kemp (Eltham); halves, D Mills (Tec.), B. Walker (Eltham), and A. Foote (Eltham); forwards, N. Hunt (Inglewood), K. Lilley (Tec.), B. Watkii/s (Eltham), N. Newlove (Tec.), ami P. Wylds (Eltham). Emergencies: Backs, L. Coulter (Waitara), R. Collingwood (Inglewood); forwards, M. Callender (Waitara) and K. Coles (Inglewood). The colours of the team will be yellow and black and the players will assemble at Mr. H. Nodder’s, Eltham, at 1 p.m. BIRD ROAD NOTES. Another successful euchre party and dance was held in the Bird Road school on Friday night. There was a large attendance* and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves till the early hours of the morning. Mrs. Wickstead and Mr. Bilski were the winners of the first prizes and Miss Goodwin and Mr. Death carried off second honours. Mr. H. Waite gupplied the music for dancing. Mr. T. Waite gave extras and Mr. Goodwin was M.C. Mr. O’Reilly and Mr. Baker have left for a trip to* Dunedin.
