England has lost the right to meet the United States in the inter-zone final for the Davis Cup by the cruellest of ill-luck. Austin was carried off owing to cramp in the .deciding set of the deciding match. Seven thousand spectators watched the keen gruelling match, both players rising to the top of their form. Austin’s difficulties began in the fourth set when bracing himself to overtake Prenn, who was loading by two sets to one. Every game was marked by long rallies and the excitement was intense.

By the eighth game Austin was limping, but managed to win the set. He was obviously in pain. In the third g me in the final set Austin slipped and fell. The crowd sympathetically called out to give him a rest. Austin, however, strug" , '’d on, limping when running for a smash. In the seventh he collapsed and had to be carried off.
