BRITAIN BEATS FRANCE

AGRICULTUR AL PRODUCTION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 15, 7.30 p.m. Paris, July 15. M. Max Lambert, the well-known French agriculturalist, has published some remarkable statistics showing that English production is superior to French and, contrary to the general belief in France, the production per. hectare in Britain is: Of wheat, 20.8 cwts. in Britain, whereas in France it is 12cwts.; of barley, 20.3 cwts. in Britain and in France 14.5’ cwts ; of oats, 20.4 cwts. in Britain and in France 15.1 cwts.; of potatoes, 149.5 cwts. in Britain and in France 76.2 cwts.; of beet sugar, 208.0 cwts. in Britain and in France 211.0 cwts.

M. Lambert expresses the opinion that this is not due to English soil being more fertile, but to the judicious use of manures and more clever drainage and irrigation and the use of more perfect machinery. Moreover, France is suffering from excessive splitting up of properties.
