HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL

REPORT OF WORK FOR MONTH.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.

“All the footpaths in Nolantown have been cleaned and coated with limestone ehips,” reported Mr J. Sturrock, borough engineer, at. the monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council last night. “There is a leakage from the overflow pipe in the water tower,” reported Mr. Sturrock. It had been noticed first after the earthquake. “My examination after the 'quake disclosed no fault excepting water escaping from the overflow pipe. The spiral pipe was rotten in places. At present nothing very serious is happening but tb.e top tank overflow might be caused to open out. in which case the tank would empty and be. out of use for fires.” To overcome the difficulty Mr Sturrock suggested. that a hole be cut in the side of the tank and that a pipe be led down the side of the tank. Nothing could then happen if the pipe broke, beyond a little water overflowing if the tank were too. full. There would then be nothing to inspect within the tank. That was how it should be. Seven cases of infectious disease were reported by the borough inspector, Mr. L. Hunt. Inspections made by him for June were eight plumbing jobs and 45 premises. Over 100 chimneys were inspected after the earthquake, the ma-, jority being in a damaged condition but not to such an extent as to create alarm on the part of occupiers. Six building permits were issued for a total value of 1 : 226. Drivers’ licenses issued had numbered 157 and £l3 was collected for dog registrations.

A letter of 1 banks is to be sent to the Juno 3 hoekey tournament committee for a donation of £5 5s towards the upkeep of Kiner Edward Park.

The attention of the lire brigade superintendent is to be drawn to the present fire plug indicators with a view to adopting some improved method of indication. The borough engineer has had the plugs thoroughly overhauled, for which action the Fire Board expressed its appreciation. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, wrote acknowledging a letter that the Hawera Borough Council supported the resolution recently passed by the Feilding Borough Council regarding Main Highway Boards’ subsidies to boroughs with populations under 6,000 in connection with the cost of streets constructed in permanent materials The council’s support would be borne in mind, said the Minister, when tho matter received the Government’s consideration. There had been no condemnations at tiie abattoirs during the month, reported Mr, 11. S. Elliott, town clerk.

Two horses and three cows had been found by Mr. George H. Blackwell, the ranger, wandering on borough roadways. Inquiry was made of the town clerk by the Under-Secretary of the Lands and Survey Department whether he could advise if it was proposed by the Turuturu-Mokai committee to claim the grant of £35 appearing on the Scenery Preservation Vote, A list of native trees it was proposed to plant was requested. Such action as the borough inspector considers advisable is to be taken in connection with the complaint of the South Taranaki Automobile Association regarding faulty focussing of headlights. The •offer of the ITawera Gas Company to light streets on two additional nights at the rate of £2 2s per night was accepted. The company is to be asked to light streets every night during July, August and September.

HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

STUDENTS’ CHARITABLE WORKS

“The wet weather has been responsible for a considerable amount of sickness, but there has been nothing in the way of an epidemic,” reported the headmaster (Mr. A. Gray) to the monthly meeting of the Hawera High School Board last night. The number on the roll, continued the report, was 270, there being 106 in the literary classes, 104 in commercial, 25 in home science, 9 in agriculture and 26 in engineering.

During the month a class of 15 had been started for motor-mechanic apprentices in the terms of the South Taranaki motor engineers’ apprenticeship award. A class in invalid cookery was being held for hospital nurses. In connection with donations for plants and pictures subsidies had been received from the department. The pupils had donated and sent to the school children of Murchison the sum of £3>, which, it was thought, might be useful in the replacing of books and other material destroyed. The sum of £5 had been contributed by the boys, and the girls, in sewing classes and in their own time, had made and sent 25 articles of warm clothing for the poor in Auckland.

The hedges had been moved preparatory to the commencement of the new building. New basketball courts were required, and authority was sought to purchase posts for them. Basketball seemed to be completely ousting hockey as a school game for girls.
