CRIME OF BLACKMAIL

WICKEDNESS DENOUNCED. London, July 2. “Blackmail is one of the most wicked crimes that can be committed. It is moral murder,” declared the Recorder of London, Sir Ernest Wild, in sentencing John Preston and Samuel Leslie, both actors, for conspiring to blackmail a candidate at the general election. The Recorder commended the unnamed candidate for his courage in bringing the blackmailers to justice. The accused, he added, had deliberately embarked upon a wicked scheme to obtain money by suggesting to the candidate that they had information calculated to injure him socially and lyLeslie was sentenced to four- years’ imprisonment and Preston to two years.
