BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

COMPETITION RULES DRAWN. At a meeting of the executive of the I North Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs | held on Saturday morning amended rules were drawn up for the competitions this season. 'The following were present: — Messrs. A. Washer (chairman), A. T. Moore, R. G. Ridling, J. M. Smith, C. W. ■ Ruebe, T. Wilson, W. AL Dill Mackay, R. C. Larsen, M. Goldsbury, F. Butler and 11. Trimble. An apology for the absence of Air. C. W. Stilton was received. Details of the next calf-rearing competition were discussed and it was agreed that both the pedigree and the grade competitions should be restricted to pupils in standard 3 and upwards, to be open for heifer calves of any dairy breed born between August 1 and September 7. Competitors are required to keep a complete record of the rearing of the calf. Although it is necessary to supply the actual costs of rearing, these figures will not be taken into consideration for judging. One calf only will be allowed each competitor, and replacement will not be permitted after the closing date of entries, which will be September 21. Calves are to be ear-marked as soon after the date of the closing of entries as possible, with the registered ear-mark (two punch holes in the right ear), and calves so marked may be judged as yearlings, two-year-olds, etc., in future years. In the case of pedigree calves where there may be objections to earmarking, it was agreed that the name of the dam and sire,-as registered, may be substituted. Judging will take place at a time decided by the executive, when the following points will be taken into consideration: (a) Condition of the calf, (b) record kept by the child who owns the calf. The grade competition comprises two classes—Jersey-Ayrshire cross and Friesian-Shorthorn cross. Any crosses other than these will be classed by the judges. In the pedigree competition there will be classes for Jersey, Ayrshire, Friesian and Milking Shorthorns. Grade calves will also be judged on dairy type and pedigree calves on breed type, but these points do not count in the rearing competition. Finally, competitorg must feed and handle the calves themselves. CROP-GROWING COMPETITIONS.

With regard to the crop-growing competitions, it was stipulated that the size of the plot must be l-40th of an acre, and after the ground has been prepared all work must be done by the competitor.

Seed and artificial manure will be supplied, and no other must be used. Two varieties of mangolds, Prizewinner and Barnes’ Stryno, and swede will be used in the competition. The swede seed, which will be obtained from the Agricultural Department, will be divided into two portions, one of which will be treated by a new process which prevents rot while the other half, which will not be so treated, will thus act as a “control.” The result of this experiment, which will in no way interfere with the competition, should be of great educational value to the children. Farmyard manure may be used liberally, but a record must be kept of the approximate amount applied. A complete record of the growth of the crop, cultural operations, general observations, etc. ; must be kept. Competitors are advised to' keep a rough notebook to enter up the work during the season. It is essential that the records be completed by the date of judging.

Judging will take place during May and June, and tin following points will be taken into consideration: (a) Yield, (b) cultivation, (c) quality, (d) chart. Entries for the competition must be made by September 21.

A vote of thanks was accorded the school teachers and pupils for the generous way in which they helped with the produce mart at the show. A similar vote of thanks was passed in appreciation of the manner in which the ladies of the A. and P. Association conducted the mart.

A sub-committee was appointed to draw up a schedule of points in connection with the Trimble shield, which is to be awarded to the school in North Taranaki showing the greatest interest and best work in the boys’ and girls’ club movement. It was decided to hold the annual general meeting on August 24.
