AMERICAN TARIFF STORM

OUTCRY AGAINST LEVIES

CANADIAN PROTEST ALARMS L REPRESENTATIVES CONFER By Telegraph—Press Association. Australian Press Association. Received July 14, 5.5 p.m. United Service. Washington, July 13. Authentic reports that Canada had protested against the proposed increases in American tariffs on shingles and lumber drew a statement from the State Department to-day that the Canadian Minister, the Hon. Vincent Massey, had conversed with the Secretary of State, Mr. Stimpson, on tariff matters.

Signs indicate that the administration is concerned more over the outcry from Canada than over some of the protests by other nations. Mr. Massey’s verbal representations are understood also to have embraced the proposed tariff on cattle. Discussions on foreign complaints against the levies have been kept simmering by the rumour that an intimation has been made of a retaliatory tariff on wheat by Britain as a sequel to the increased United States taxes on imports. This is denied in official circles.

PREFERENCES WITHIN EMPIRE.

NO IMMEDIATE ACTION IN CANADA.

Received July .14, 5.5 p.m. United Service. Ottawa, July 13

In the absence of the Minister of Finance, the Hon. J. A. Robb, it is improbable that Canada will take immediate action in respect of the pronouncement by the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt. Hon. Philip Snowden, against Empire preferential tariffs. The matter may be discussed when Cabinet meets next week, however.
