Fire in two holds of the steamer King Cadwallon spread rapidly yesterday and the efforts of the crew to extinguish it were unavailing. The ship has been abandoned with the sea-cocks open. The steamer Ardenhall arrived half an hom - before the crew abandoned the King Cadwallon after’ opening the seacocks to prevent the hulk becoming a danger to shipping. The flagship Calcutta, which was at Durban, had been ordered to rush to the assistance of the boats and left in the evening, but on receipt of the news of the rescue returned to port.

The King Cadwallon was en route from Durban to Adelaide, bringing coal from England to Australia. When the fire was discovered on Thursday the vessel was ordered back to Durban.

One of the King Line fleet, London, the King Cadwallon is a. vessel of 5110 tons. It was built at Hong Kong in 1920.
