COMPETITION FOR JULIAN CUP CELTIC DEFEAT CALEDONIANS. SENIOR MATCH AT HAWERA. Association football matches for the Julian senior cup were continued in Taranaki on Saturday. Caledonians were defeated by Celtic at Hawera by three goals to one, while Stratford had no difficulty in disposing o f Pirates at Western Park by four to nil. No appearance at the Fitzroy ground was made by Egmont United for their match with Rangers. Whether the match will be forfeited or postponed, or the points divided, will be decided by the executive later. Stratford outclassed Pirates during a match in the mud at Western Park and won' by four goals to nil. The home side was weakened by the inclusion of several juniors, while towards the end of the first spell Leane (centre half) was injured and was replaced by J. Anderson, another junior. Despite this, however, Pirates had the greatest number of their few . opportunities in the second spell. Owing to the late arrival of the Stratford team, the game was played in 35-minute divisions. Pirates kicked off, but Stratford were immediately on the attack. The advantage was short lived, however, for Pirates went down with a strong run on Brittendon’s side. The ball was sent across to Hylton, who centred. Cheeseman relieved the pressure and away went the visitors to allow Thomas to test Perry-Keen. The attack was continued and Baker sent in a long shot that was saved by the goalie. A minute later Thomas again made an unsuccessful attempt. Payne sent a fine centre to Johnson, who shot straight at Perry-Keen. Thomas had a shot once more diverted and then Pirates took a turn. Hylton sent to Anderson for him to follow on to the scoring area, only to be deprived of the ball by Cheeseman. After a period of midfield play Perry-Keen was given several shots co stop. Stratford gained a corner, but could not turn it to advantage. Puncheon s attempt sailed over the bar and a similar fate attended a shot by Payne. Stratford were conceded another corner. A free kick on Stratford's side of the half-way line gave Pirates an advantage. Hylton received on the side and took down, but was dispossessed by Baker as he was about to centre. Puncheon put in some good work and enabled Thomas to test PerryKeen. Puncheon waited in front of the posts and, from Johnson, registered the first score with a shot just too good for Perry-Keen. McKay kicked away when the attack came from the side, but Thomas was in position and his shot juct grazed the post. Shortly afterwards Potter registered Stratford’s second goal with a good side shot. The spell ended with a corner to Stratford.

The visitors continued their pressure after the interval and Pirates made only one or two ineffective sallies before Perry-Keen was tested. The ball bounced from him to the feet of Thomas, who shot it straight through. Within less than a minute Payne had added a fourth goal. Pirates were outclassed, but they made a good rally when they peppered the Stratford backs for several minutes, following which someone skied the ball over the bar. Perry-Keen was again given some work to do until Pirates got away and Anderson and Hylton secured, only to be deprived of the ball by Cheeseman. AlcKay sent in a long, straight shot against the upright. With McKay in the front line, Pirates w<?re now keeping the ball more among their forwards, but the defence of Brown, Cheeseman and the halfbacks was too sure. AlcKay came through in a solo effort and passed Cheeseman, but his shot was wide. A corner to Pirates was abortive and Stratford again attacked with Payne in the van. The best that came of it was a corner, however, and this was resultless. Then Johnson was deprived of a fine opportunity by Oscroft and McKay together. Brittendon sent in a long shot from the side and to save Linnell had to sprawl in the mud. There was no further score and the game ended with Stratford 4 Pirates- 0 Air. T. Farley refereed.
