FARM AND DAIRY

EXPORT OF STUD SHEEP.

SHIPMENTS TO MANY COUNTRIES

■Messrs. Wright Stephenson and Co.,' Ltd. advise that they have recently com-| nleted a large number of shipments to oversea countries of pedigree sheep bred in the Dominion. A particularly large consignment comprising 33 . stud Cor- - riedale rams, eight stud Corriedale ewes, 28 Lincoln rams and one Merino ram was recently made to Uruguay, Argentina and Patagonia. The Corriedale rams were bred by Messrs. H. T. Little, Hui Hui, Woodgrove, Hugh Ensor, Rakahuri, and Win. White, all of North Canterbury, and J. A. Johnstone, Bushey Park Park, Otago. The Corriedale ewes shipped to Uruguay were bred F by Mr. Hugh Ensor. Included amongst the Corriedale rams were several noted prize-winners both at the last Royal and Canterbury A. and P. shows. It is interesting to sec that the overseas breeders are determined by buy some of the best rams bred in the Dominion,. as, only quite recently, Messrs. Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd. shipped last year’s champion Corricdale ram at the Canterbury show to a Patagonian ' client for which a record price for the Dominion was paid. The Merino ram . was bred by the veteran Marlborough breeder, Mr. Charles Coulter, of Hawkcsbury. He is the first ram of this breed shipped from the Dominion to Uruguay. Tho Lincolns which comprised probably . the most valuable shipment which has been made from the Dominion to South America included a large number of prize-winning sheep at the Royal, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Dannevirke and Masterton shows. Tho Dannevirke ■ champion ram which was also a winner at the Royal show in the spring was purchased at auction at the Wairarapa Breeders’ Annual Ram Fair for the record price of the year. The Lincolns in this consignment were bred by ■Messrs. G. V. Smith, Gisborne; A. D. McMaster, Koran, Featherston; L. R. iWilton, Rangitumau, Masterton,- W. H. Gaisford, Aringi, Dannevirke; Mm. Ravnor, The Cliffs, Masterton; W. H. Wybourne, Whenuakura; and I’. Howard Booth, Carterton. Three Romney rams in the shipment for Patagonia were bred by Messrs. E. E. Short, Maluia, Feilding, and N. J. Short, Te Mahora, Waituna West. This shipment, in addition to the Romneys bred by Mr. Q. Donald, of Allow, Featherston; and Corriedales bred by Mr, H. T. Little, included the first consignment of Southdown rams shipped to South America from New Zealand. These were pur-

chased by Mr. H. H. Jamieson, of Bio Gallegos Patagonia. They were a s bred by Mr. Q. Donald, of Featherston, and it‘interesting to note that the purchaser, Mr. Jamieson, is a son of one of the earliest settlers in Patagonia who was responsible for. the erection of the first freezing works in. that «o« Mr. Jamieson intends to give the boutlidowns. a good trial, and, should they prove suitable for his country and foi mating with the fine woolled sheep bred there, no doubt a good trade in this breed will be established between, the Dominion and Patagonia. Mr. Jamieson is a very enterprising importer as. it was he who purchased the champion Corriedale ram from Mr. Little. Messrs. Wright Stephenson and Co, Ltd. also recently sold for export to Victoria the. complete Ryeland dock oi Messrs. Ellis Bros, of Bulls. The Surrey Hock of Messrs. Ellis Bros, has been established for quite a number of years, and, although not a large one, produced quite a number of well-known prize-win-ners. Their champion ram was included in the shipment. Another shipment of considerable note was a splendid lino of 50 Corriedale ewes to a South African client. These sheep were bred bv Mr. J. A. Johnstone, of Bushey Park, Otago. Mr. Johnstone has also received a substantial repeat order from a client in Scotland for both rams and ewes and these are to bo shipped at an early date. This later shipment is a great tribute to the Corriedale breed evolved in New Zealand as the breed has been well tried out in Scotland since tho original shipment was made to the Wembley Exhibition. These sheep and a consignment ordered direct from Mr. Johnstone were both secured by the one breeder and the success lie has met with has resulted in the most recent order. A high class stud Corriedale ram was also shipped recently to Kenya Colony. This ram was bred by Mr, H. T. Little and is also a repeat order from a client in that country. This firm are also in receipt of advice from their Australian agents that tho Romney sheep recently shipped to clients in Australia have been very successful, and amongst tho honours secured in tho recent Sydney show was the grand championship in the Romney section. The Romneys provided one of the strongest classes in that show this rear, and the ram in question, which was shipped to Mt. W. R. Glasson, president of tho Australian Long Woolled Sheep Breeders’ Association, was bred by Mr. R. W. Matthews, of Waiorongomai. This is the third successive time that a ram by Mi\ Matthews has won the grand championship at tho Sydney sheep show, and, each time, the champion has been exhibited bv Mr. Glasson.
