IMPORTS OF FRUIT CASES trade wanted in the dominion. AN INVESTIGATION PROMISED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Tlio Hon. W. B. Taverner (Comniisfeioner of State Forests), replying in the House of Representatives to-day to Mr. G. Black’s request that a committee representing the fruitgrowers, sawmillers and timber workers bo set up to consider the possibility of manufacturing fruit cases in New Zealand, said he Would confer with the Minister of Industries and Commerce on the subject. The Minister - remarked that 700,000 eases had been imported from Canada last year, and he considered such cases should, if possible, be made in New Zealand, thereby utilising New Zealand labour and raw material. He would, if necessary, recommend the appoinment ©f a select committee to oeal with the matter.

Sir Joseph Ward, replying to Mr. 11. E. Holland, agreed that in view of the conditions at Westport at the present time there was need for a good deal of patience in the business community. He would make inquiries, and if it were evident that wholesale houses were pressing the retailers for settlement of accounts and the latter were being forced into a position of transferring the pressure to their customers, he would recommend the wholesale houses to take a lenient attitude.

The following Bills were introduced and read a first time: Gaming Amendment Bill (Sir George Hunter), Defence Amendment Bill (Air. H. G. R. Mason), Local Authorities Empowering (Aviation Encouragement) Bill (the Hon. T. M. Wilford), Scaffolding and Excavation Amendment Bill (tho Hon. W. A. Veitch).
