BLOODTHIRSTY CONTEST

HANCOCK DEFEATS PURDY. KNOCK-OUT IN THE TWELFTH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Received July 13,. 12.50 a.m. Sydney, July 12. In the welter championship of Australia to-night, Wally Hancock, 10.34, the holder, knocked out Charlie Purdy, New Zealand, 10,54, the challenger, in the twelfth round. It was an exciting and in some respects sensational encounter, with Hancock. always dangerous. Purdy began cautiously, Hancock was confident, but Purdy warmed up to his task in the third round and, although he took a lot of punishment, he himself gave a goodly measure. Hancock used his left freely and wildly, often connecting with Purdy’s chin and nose. During the fifth round the New Zealander was groggy, and similarly in the eighth. Purdy, however, managed to recover and sent In some telling blows to his opponent’s face and body. Hancock in the tenth round continued to attack, but found Purdy, who crouched low, most elusive. Blood was flowing from both men’s faces. It was indeed a bloodthirsty contest. Purdy was obviously tired when he was floored in the twelfth round.
